How to buy a prepaid SIM card in Turkey
Product · 24 October 2025Clément Bolmont
Planning a trip to Turkey, whether to explore the historic sites of Istanbul, relax on the Turquoise Coast, or marvel at Cappadocia's unique landscapes, involves meticulous planning. One of the most important parts of your preparation is ensuring you have reliable, affordable mobile data. But, if you’re travelling from the UK, navigating international roaming fees and local Turkish options can be confusing.
In this guide, we break down your options and explain why an eSIM for Turkey is a convenient and cost-effective way to stay connected.
eSIM T&Cs apply.
Why reliable mobile data is essential for your Turkey trip
Beyond the obvious need to share your holiday snaps, connectivity is vital for several reasons:
- Navigation: using apps like Google Maps to navigate long coastal drives or Istanbul's complex traffic
- Communication: talking to locals using translation apps
- Ride-sharing: booking local transport or taxis
- Safety: having access to emergency numbers and resources the moment you need them
Without a Turkish SIM card, you rely entirely on hotel or café WiFi, which can be patchy, slow, and, in some cases, unsecure.
Can you use your UK SIM card in Turkey?
The answer is yes, but it's almost always the most expensive option. Since Brexit, many UK mobile networks (like Vodafone, EE, and Three) have re-introduced or increased daily charges and out-of-bundle rates for roaming outside Europe.
The high costs of roaming with a UK SIM card
Turkey is one of the most expensive roaming zones for most UK providers. While specific rates vary, you could face charges relating to:
- Daily passes: paying a daily fee (often between £6–8) to unlock your home plan's data allowance. These can quickly add up on a 2-week trip.
- Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) rates: if you don't buy a pass, the charges are often expensive. Data can cost upwards of £1 per MB (megabyte), meaning a few minutes of video streaming or a simple map download could cost a lot.
- Hidden use: even background apps updating or receiving a simple text message can trigger minimum daily charges or start accumulating fees you won't see until your bill arrives.
If you're travelling on a budget or plan to stay in the country for more than a few days, using your UK mobile plan isn't a good idea. It's usually best to switch off data roaming as soon as you land in Turkey to avoid bill shock.

Local Turkey SIM cards: your traditional options
Turkey has 3 main mobile network operators: Turkcell, Vodafone, and Türk Telekom (formerly Avea).
These operators offer dedicated Turkish prepaid SIM card plans, which provide a fixed amount of high-speed data and sometimes some local calling credit for a set number of days.
Leading Turkish mobile operators and plans
The main players are known for strong coverage in urban areas, but their reach can differ significantly. Here's what they typically offer:
- Turkcell is widely regarded as the premium provider, offering the most extensive network coverage and fastest speeds, even in rural and remote areas like parts of Eastern Turkey and Cappadocia. Their tourist packages are often slightly more expensive but offer better reliability.
- Vodafone Turkey provides strong coverage in metropolitan and regional areas, offering competitive pricing and good data allowances. They're a reliable choice for customers primarily staying in major cities like Istanbul or Izmir, or popular tourist resorts along the coast.
- Türk Telekom usually offers the most affordable prepaid options and is known for competitive rates. It's a good option for budget-conscious customers staying exclusively within the major urban centres where their network is strongest. Coverage can be patchier in very remote or mountainous regions.
Where can I buy a Turkish prepaid SIM card?
- Airports: the most convenient spot is usually immediately after baggage claim at major international airports like Istanbul Airport (IST). While convenient, airport prices are notoriously high for tourist SIM packages.
- Official stores: visiting an official Turkcell, Vodafone, or Türk Telekom shop in a shopping mall or city centre ensures you get better prices and full activation support from staff. This is usually the cheapest way to get a physical SIM.
- Other vendors: avoid purchasing SIM cards from unverified small shops or kiosks outside the official stores, as prices can be inflated, and activation might be complicated or unreliable.
If you choose the traditional route, be prepared for some bureaucracy and potential extra costs.
Keep in mind that Turkish law requires that any mobile phone imported from abroad must be registered with the government. This means that if you use a Turkish SIM card in a phone purchased outside of Turkey, that phone will automatically be blocked from accessing all Turkish mobile networks after 120 days of use.
For short holidays of under 4 months, this rule won't affect you. However, if you're planning a longer stay, working remotely, or studying abroad, you must register your phone's IMEI number and pay a substantial one-time fee to keep the device functioning on Turkish networks.

The modern alternative: why a Turkey eSIM is the smarter choice
While buying a local prepaid SIM card is better than relying on expensive UK roaming, it still involves hassle and takes time. This is where embedded SIMs (eSIMs) offer a solution, and we're leading the charge for travellers.
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile embedded in your phone's hardware. Instead of swapping out tiny pieces of plastic, you simply install a data plan digitally using a QR code or an activation code.
The advantage of Revolut eSIMs
We offer a range of regional and global eSIM plans, including a dedicated Turkey eSIM option that can be purchased and activated in-app.
Feature | Physical SIM card | Revolut eSIM |
Purchase location | Airport or official store in Turkey | Anytime, anywhere in-app |
Activation | In-person registration with passport required | Fast digital activation via QR code |
Travel prep | Must wait until you land to buy and register | Can be set up before leaving the UK |
Keeping home number | Must remove home SIM, losing access to calls/texts | Keep your physical SIM active for calls/texts, use eSIM for data |
Flexibility | Limited to one local plan and duration | Choose from short-term, regional, or Global eSIM plans |
Cost structure | Fixed, up-front tourist package fee | Flexible pay-per-plan digital purchase |
By choosing a digital solution, you can land in Turkey with your connectivity already sorted, completely skipping the queueing and over-inflated airport prices. You can search for directions, book a taxi, and contact your accommodation the moment you step off the plane. Crucially, the eSIM also eliminates the risk of losing your physical UK SIM card.
Staying connected across the region
If your holiday involves travel beyond Turkey, perhaps to Greece, Bulgaria, or Cyprus, buying multiple physical SIM cards is inconvenient. Our regional plans, including our Europe eSIM, offer coverage across multiple countries, ensuring you remain connected throughout your entire multi-stop itinerary without needing a new SIM at every border.

Final travel tips for Turkey
Now you’ve got your SIM card for Turkey sorted, here are a few extra tips to ensure a smooth, stress-free trip:
- Cash and cards: card payments are widely accepted in cities, malls, and restaurants. However, cash (in Turkish Lira) is essential for local markets (bazaars), street food vendors, and tipping. You can withdraw cash from ATMs using your Revolut card.
- Bargaining: haggling is expected in major tourist areas, like the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Be friendly, firm, and enjoy the process, but remember to always be polite.
- Local transport: Istanbul’s metro and tram systems are excellent, but you'll need an Istanbulkart (a rechargeable card) to use them. For longer distances, Turkey has great bus networks.
The IMEI rule reminder: if your stay is longer than 4 months, remember that registering your phone with the Turkish government is mandatory to prevent it from being blocked.
No withdrawal fees charged by Revolut within your plan's rolling monthly limit. Fair-usage fees and third-party ATM fees may apply.
