What is the exchange rate?

The exchange rate shows you how much your money's worth in another currency. Rates change constantly due to market fluctuations, but many providers also charge markups that drive the cost up for you when you send money abroad.

Our top tip? Research your options. Otherwise, you may end up paying more than you need to, and who wants that?

Currency exchange comparison FAQs

  • Providers set their own exchange rates for currency conversion, so it's wise to compare your options. Some include markups or fees in their exchange rate, which means you may end up paying more than you need to without even realising it. When you exchange currencies or send money abroad with Revolut, you'll always see our exchange rates and fees in-app, so you can make an informed decision. That means no nasty surprises — ever. Find more info on our currency exchange rates in the Help Centre.
  • What is the Revolut exchange rate? We use a real-time exchange rate that's continuously updated based on the buy and sell rates we receive from various independent data sources. The buy rate (also called the bid rate) estimates the highest rate that someone's willing to pay for a currency on the market, and the sell rate (also called the ask rate) represents the lowest rate at which someone is willing to sell the currency. You can check our current rates using our currency converter at the top of the page. You'll also see them in-app before you convert or send money abroad, along with any exchange or transfer fees. Exchange rates fluctuate constantly, so always double-check the current rate in-app before converting.
  • Your Revolut account is a multi-currency account that allows you to manage, send, and receive money in 36 currencies — all in one app. Here's what you get when you open an account with Revolut:

    • Low fees: we keep our transfer fees low and our exchange rates competitive, so you can send money without overpaying.
    • Fast money transfers: send money to other Revolut friends instantly — in 20 seconds or less.
    • Currency exchange: when you send money abroad with us, we automatically convert your money to your recipient's currency at great rates to help save you time and money.
    • Security: our 2,500-strong fraud prevention team is on the lookout to keep your money safe.

Open a Revolut account to explore all this and much more.

  • When you send money internationally, there are two types of costs you should keep an eye out for: currency exchange and transfer fees. You'll see all costs in-app before you send.

    Currency exchange rates and fees

Sending money internationally often involves 2 different currencies: the currency you’re using to pay for the transfer and your recipient's currency. Before you send money abroad in a currency that's different from your recipient's, check our exchange rate in-app. This shows you how much the amount you enter in your currency is worth in your recipient's currency. You may also pay an additional currency exchange fee, depending on your plan, the amount you're sending, and the time of your transfer.
    • If your transfer amount is within your plan’s limit, you won't pay any additional currency exchange fees on weekdays.
    • You'll pay a 1% fee on all currency exchanges during the weekend, regardless of your payment type or plan.
    • If you're over your monthly exchange allowance, you'll pay an additional fair usage fee, depending on your plan (1% for the Standard plan and 0.5% for the Plus plan). There are no fair usage fees with our Premium, Metal, and Ultra plans.

    Transfer fees

Depending on the transfer method you choose, you may also pay a small transfer fee. This is the amount we charge to process your transfer.
    • Bank transfers
    • You may pay a small bank transfer fee when you send money abroad. You'll get discounts on these fees with our Premium, Metal, and Ultra plans. External banks may charge non-Revolut transfer fees that we can't foresee.
    • Card transfers
    • You'll pay a small card transfer fee when you send money to someone using their card details. The amount will depend on how much money you're transferring and where you're sending from.
    • Revolut-to-Revolut transfers
    • You won't pay any fees when you send money online to other Revolut accounts.
  • The time it takes for your money transfer to arrive depends on factors like the payment method you choose and the currency. You can see the estimated arrival time in-app before you send and track the status of your transfer. Check out our Help Centre for more on money transfers.

How long do international bank transfers take?

Bank transfers from abroad generally arrive within 3 to 5 business days, but they could arrive the same day, depending on the country and currency. On rare occasions, external banks may experience delays that we can't foresee, and your transfer could take longer than expected.

How long does a card transfer take?

Transfers to cards usually arrive in seconds, but they can take up to 30 minutes.

    How fast are Revolut-to-Revolut transfers?

Transfers to other Revolut customers are instant. This means they usually arrive in 20 seconds or less.
  • You can send money in 70+ currencies to 160+ countries. All you have to do is start a transfer by choosing the amount you want to send in any of the 36 currencies you can keep in-app, then choose the currency you want your recipient to get. We'll show you our rates and fees in-app, and automatically complete the exchange when you hit Send. We also support in-app exchanges in 36 holding currencies. This means you can keep any of those currencies in your account and exchange between them. If you exchange an amount in your main currency to a currency you don't hold yet, a separate balance will be created in your account so you can start spending. It's that easy.
