Mobile wallets explained: your guide to digital wallets and paying with your phone

Product · 22 October 2025Clément Bolmont

These days, your physical wallet is now often replaced by the most powerful financial tool you own: your phone.

A mobile wallet is a secure, app-based solution that digitises your entire payment ecosystem — from cards to loyalty schemes — and houses it on your smartphone or wearable device. This means faster, cheaper, and fundamentally simpler transactions, whether you're settling a restaurant bill or making an instant international transfer.

Read on to learn about the most convenient and secure methods to handle your daily finances, and how to move away from cash and plastic cards.

Defining the digital payment ecosystem

To truly understand how to use this technology, it helps to understand the often-confusing terms that describe digital payment tools. Think of it as a financial ecosystem where each item has a distinct role.

What's a digital wallet?

The term digital wallet refers to any electronic service or software used to securely store payment information for digital transactions. It can be accessed on multiple device types, including desktop computers, tablets, or laptops, primarily for online shopping and e-commerce checkouts. It provides a secure cloud environment for your details.

What's a mobile wallet?

A mobile wallet is a type of digital wallet that's built for use on a mobile device such as your smartphone or smartwatch. You can use it to make in-person, contactless payments. When people talk about paying with their phone, they're talking about using their mobile wallet.

What's an e-wallet?

E-wallets (electronic wallets) are often confused with digital wallets, but they started as a system where you had to add money to the account balance before you could spend it. Think of it like a pre-paid debit card, but entirely digital. While many modern mobile phone wallets can hold a balance, the term digital wallet is now more commonly used for any platform that handles electronic payments and transfers.

The key takeaway: a mobile wallet enables physical tap to pay and Revolut-to-Revolut transfers on the move.

The technology behind seamless payments

Although tapping your phone to make a payment seems simple, the process relies on a sophisticated chain of secure, instantaneous data exchange. This process ensures that your transaction isn't only fast but also safe from fraud.

Near-field communication (NFC): how to tap to pay

NFC is the key technology behind modern in-store contactless payments. It's a short-range wireless communication standard that lets devices share data when they're within 4cm of each other.

When you put your device next to a payment machine, the chips in both devices connect securely. They send the necessary transaction data without needing to touch each other. This makes it much faster to check out, since you don't need to swipe or insert a card.

Tokenisation: the security layer

Tokenisation is a method of cryptography that protects your most sensitive data. Here's how it works:

  • Secure storage: when you add a debit or credit card to your mobile wallet, your bank or payment network replaces your actual account number with a unique, randomly generated proxy value called a token. This token is stored securely on your phone.
  • Transaction transmission: when you make a payment, your phone sends this temporary token — not your real card details — to the merchant.
  • Authorisation: the merchant passes the token to the payment network, where it's decrypted and linked to your original account number for authorisation.

This process means that even if a retailer's system is hacked, a fraudster only gets a useless token that can't be reversed or used for later transactions. This makes mobile payments safer than physical ones.

Beyond NFC: QR codes and app-to-app transfers

You can make transfers from your phone in other ways, too. Here are some examples:

  • QR codes: these are often used to make quick payments in shops — especially in areas with less advanced NFC systems — or for fixed payments (like paying a printed bill). You scan the code with your phone's camera to start the process.
  • App-to-app: platforms like ours let customers send money instantly to each other with only a phone number or username, avoiding traditional bank transfer times and fees. This is a fast, cheap, and easy way to make a transfer.
  • Payment links: you can share a secure, unique link instantly via text message or email, and the payer can settle the amount securely using a card or their account details without needing to download the Revolut app themselves.

Mobile wallet security: safer than carrying cash and cards

The security of a modern mobile phone wallet is layered, offering protections that a physical wallet can't match. This multi-layered approach is why these platforms are considered one of the safest ways to make payments.

Mandatory biometric protection

Your phone itself protects your details. Here's how:

  • Device security integration: your mobile wallet is hidden safely behind your device's lock screen and Secure Element. This means your details are protected from the outset.
  • User verification: unlike a contactless card that lets you reach a transaction limit before asking for a PIN, mobile wallet payments require biometric verification (Face ID or fingerprint recognition) or a secure passcode for nearly every transaction. This means that if your phone is stolen, the thief can't easily access your money.

Advanced fraud detection and alerts

Mobile wallets allow you to check your payments in real-time and take any necessary actions immediately, with:

  • Instant notifications: push notifications for every transaction, giving you a real-time account of your spending. This allows you to spot and report any suspicious activity immediately.
  • Remote control: if your phone is lost or stolen, you don't have to wait around. Use your Revolut account on another device to instantly freeze or block your physical and virtual cards.

The true benefits of mobile wallets

For the modern customer, the benefits of using a mobile wallet are convenience, speed, and cost-efficiency, especially for global transactions.

Frictionless transactions (online and in-store)

The core appeal is simplicity. Mobile wallets eliminate friction at every stage of the payment process, thanks to:

  • Swift in-store payments: the tap to pay process is faster than traditional card chip insertion, reducing queue times
  • Seamless online checkout: for e-commerce, a mobile wallet can instantly add payment and shipping details, making checkout quicker

The future of international money transfers

You can use your phone to access low-cost, faster transfers around the world, with:

  • Instant global transfers: sending money to another Revolut customer, even in another country, can be as fast as sending a text message, removing the typical waiting period for an international transfer
  • Clarity on currency exchange: we use competitive exchange rates for currency conversions, always visible in-app before you hit Send

Managing your entire life in one place

A mobile phone wallet is designed to declutter your life. It can store more than just payment cards. It allows for:

  • Digital storage: consolidate digital versions of loyalty cards, gift vouchers, event tickets, and travel passes, so all your essentials are accessible on your phone
  • Expense tracking: since every transaction is recorded digitally, mobile wallet apps provide automated expense tracking, giving you a real-time overview of your spending habits and helping you stay on top of your budget

Getting started with us

We're committed to making our secure mobile app the simplest way to handle your finances, whether you’re splitting a bill in the UK or supporting family abroad. Here's how to get started:

  1. Download the app: get the Revolut app in your device's app store and download it to your mobile phone.
  2. Sign up for Revolut: follow the simple, quick onboarding process. You need to verify your identity, which usually takes just a few minutes in-app.
  3. Add money: once your account is set up, tap Add money to securely transfer money from your existing account into your Revolut account.
  4. Navigate to Payments: in the app, tap the Payments tab.
  5. Choose a recipient: select an existing contact, or enter the new recipient's details. You can often send money using just their phone number if they also use Revolut.
  6. Enter amount: input the amount you wish to send. If it's a cross-currency transfer, the app will clearly display the exchange rate and total cost before you commit.
  7. Confirm and send: review the details, use your biometric authentication (Face ID or fingerprint) to verify the transaction, and tap Send. The money will be instantly transferred to the recipient, often arriving in seconds.

Adding your Revolut card to a mobile wallet

You can easily use your Revolut card for contactless payments by adding it directly to your preferred mobile wallet service:

  1. Go to the Cards section: in the Revolut app, tap the Cards icon on the bottom navigation bar.
  2. Select your card: choose the physical or virtual card you wish to add to your mobile wallet.
  3. Initiate setup: look for the option that says Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Google Pay and tap it.
  4. Follow device prompts: our app will automatically launch the setup process in the corresponding wallet application (Apple Pay or Google Pay) on your device. Follow the on-screen instructions to verify and add your card.
  5. Start tapping: once verified, your card is ready to use for secure, contactless payments wherever you see the respective mobile payment symbol.
