Welcome to our interview series, where we shed a spotlight on the Rev-celerator Ambassadors who are shaping the future of finance — while mentoring the next generation of talent.

In this interview, Mark Fukson — Senior Software Engineer, Credit — shares his insights on how best to launch your career in finance after university.

Tell us about your role at Revolut?

Revolut is a fast-paced company where we’re always working to grow and achieve amazing things. This drive for progress requires strong coordination and careful planning. My role focuses on helping with this coordination within the Credit Data Science team.

As we grow by expanding into new markets and launching new products, coordination becomes even more important to reach our ambitious goals. Our team works on projects that combine credit and data science, from building fully automated credit risk models to developing tools like automated feature generation, which make the model development process easier for our data scientists.

I’m able to combine my degree in mathematics with my extensive experience in both data science and software engineering, to help develop efficient tools that address the challenges our team faces. This knowledge enables me to identify key issues, and guide the team toward creating solutions that are technically robust and tailored to the needs of data scientists.

By aligning technical and strategic goals, I contribute to the development of tools and strategies that allow the team to focus on innovation and deliver impactful results.

How does the career you wanted to pursue as a grad align with where you are today?

My career journey started in the 9th grade when I started to look for ways to earn money by building websites and e-shops for small businesses. However, it quickly became clear that this kind of work wasn’t for me. That realisation led me to explore computer science more deeply, and through an unsuccessful attempt at creating a laser cutting optimisation algorithm, I discovered my passion for the mathematical foundations of problem-solving. This pivotal moment inspired me to pursue a degree in applied mathematics.

While studying, I also worked as an ML engineer on projects of both vision AI and underlying data preparation for such models. At the time, I didn’t realise it, but this sparked my interest in data — a passion that has shaped my career. Over time, my focus shifted toward data flows and data science tooling, ultimately leading to my role as the leader of the modeling platform team at Revolut.

Looking back, my path wasn’t straightforward — it was shaped by experimentation, failure, and change. Each step, whether it felt like progress or a setback, brought me closer to discovering what truly drives me.

Career paths don’t have to follow a set trajectory to lead to success. They can evolve in unexpected ways, and those shifts often make all the difference. Experience earned along the way, as far as it could potentially be from your true passion, helps to shape who you are today — both professionally and personally.

What do you most enjoy about your work with interns and grads?

During the 2024 Rev-celerator Internship Programme, I had the privilege of mentoring 3 interns from Poland. Their drive and ingenuity consistently exceeded my expectations, achieving impressive results in a remarkably short period. Watching them grow and seeing the impact they could make reaffirmed the immense value of early careers talent at Revolut. For me, mentoring interns is not only an opportunity to guide and inspire - it’s a chance to learn and grow alongside them.

As an early careers mentor, I find it incredibly rewarding to be part of this process. It challenges me to revisit assumptions, question established practices, and view problems through the fresh lens of someone just starting their career.

What makes the Rev-celerator Internship and Graduate Programmes such empowering career launchpads?

They offer hands-on experience across a range of fields within a company driven by innovation. At Revolut, interns and grads gain exposure to state-of-the-art processes and technologies, working alongside some of the best specialists in the industry.

This unique opportunity not only provides practical skills, but also helps interns discover and deepen their passion for their chosen field. As careers are often non-linear, these experiences can ignite curiosity, refine interests, and shape the trajectory of a future career.

Do you have any advice for students and grads who are job searching?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and never see time spent exploring as wasted. If a position, field, or employer feels even somewhat relatable, dive in and explore — it’s the best way to learn if it’s the right fit for you. Even if it turns out not to be your long-term path, every experience adds value. You’ll gain unique perspectives, transferable skills, and fresh ways of thinking that can help you approach future challenges creatively.
