Financial basics · 28 November 2025Team Revolut
At Revolut, we’re all about offering a wide range of money tools in one app so you can manage your daily finances, travel with ease, budget smarter, and save for the future. Plus, with a Revolut account, you can diversify your finances with things like crypto or investments. Revolut has something for just about everyone — and you can set up an account for free.
But if you already have an account with us and you’re wondering how to close your account, we’re here to help.
Of course, we’ll be sad to see you go — but we understand that sometimes your needs change, and Revolut may no longer be the right fit. That’s why we’ve made the personal account closure process as straightforward as possible. You can do it all within the app. And you can always reach out to our support team in-app if you have any questions or concerns.
In this article, we’ll guide you through how to close a Revolut account step-by-step — and walk you through reasons why it may be worth keeping it if you’re on the fence.
Thinking about closing your Revolut account? How to decide
Here are a few reasons people might consider closing a Revolut account, and what to consider before you make the decision:
- I don’t use it anymore: if you haven't been using Revolut lately, remember it’s free to keep a Standard account open — we don’t charge a maintenance fee and you don’t need to have a balance in it. If you’re on a paid plan, try downgrading first and keeping your account open. You might find yourself wanting it again some day. There may be a downgrading fee depending on your plan.
- I only needed it for a trip: Revolut is a great tool for spending and sending abroad. But it offers more than just competitive currency exchange and global transfers. Revolut offers a long list of features that help you manage your daily spending. Check out RevPoints for example, which you can earn on eligible spending and redeem for rewards.
- I have security concerns: you need an account that makes you feel safe. With Revolut, your money is protected by our advanced security measures, and we comply with the highest standards set by financial regulators. Our always-on monitoring system and dedicated, 24/7 financial crime team are with you. You can even customise security settings in-app, report fraud fast, and freeze your card to add extra layers of security.
- I have a problem or question: you can contact our support team 24/7 in-app. We’re available to help you in 100+ languages. Plus, our Help Centre offers extensive ready-to-go answers to common questions.
- I want a feature Revolut doesn’t have: if you’re missing a feature, you can let us know. We’re always working on launching new features based on our customer feedback, so accounts better suit your needs.
Once you’ve considered your options, you might decide closing your account is the right decision for you. Next, we’ll go into how to do it in-app.
Preparing for account closure: your essential checklist
Before you can successfully close any Revolut account, you’ll need to complete a few important steps.
Bring your account balance to zero
Your total account balance must be zero across all currencies and balances before you can begin closing your account. You’ll need to:
- convert and close all accounts: any funds or assets held across your accounts (including investments, Crypto, or Pockets) will need to be converted back to your base currency and withdrawn.
- withdraw or transfer all funds: move any remaining money from your Revolut account to an external account. Ensure all currency accounts and Pockets are cleared.
- settle any outstanding balances: make sure you’ve paid anything you may owe Revolut (such as fees for Premium cards issued within the last 3 months).
Manage subscriptions and paid plans
If you have any pending or recurring payments, you won’t be able to close your account right away. So make sure you:
- cancel Direct Debits and subscriptions: go to the 'Scheduled payments' section of the app to cancel regular payments. Then review any online services linked to your Revolut card and update them with a different payment method.
- downgrade your plan: if you’re on a paid plan (Plus, Premium, Metal, or Ultra), first downgrade your plan to Standard before starting the closure process. Check the app for any potential early cancellation fees based on your minimum contractual period.
Save your financial records: download Revolut statements
It’s important to keep a record of your financial history. You can download up to 7 years of account statements directly from the Revolut app. You may need these records for tax purposes or to prove transactions in the future.
Be sure to back up this data to a secure external location before closing your account. This is in line with general financial best practices recommended by bodies like the Financial Conduct Authority.
Step-by-step: how to close your personal Revolut account in the app
Once you’ve prepped everything, closing your account is a simple, automated process you can handle from start to finish in-app. Here’s how:
- Tap your profile icon in the top-left corner
- Select Account → Scroll down → Close account
- Follow the on-screen instructions to submit your request
In most cases, if you’ve followed all the pre-closure steps, your account closure will be initiated immediately.
Closing your account without the app
If you're unable to access your Revolut app, you can use the process below.
How to close your Revolut account without the app
If you’re unable to log in (e.g., lost phone or locked out), you'll need to request the account closure manually:
- Email Revolut Support: send your request to our dedicated support team at support@revolut.com
- Verification: to protect your security, you’ll need to provide specific information to verify your identity, such as your full legal name, registered address, and details about your last few transactions
- Manual process: be aware that this manual process will take longer than the in-app method
Other things to know: account re-opening, costs, and how we handle your data
Will there be account closing costs?
For most customers on a Standard plan, there is typically no cost to close your Revolut account. But there may be some costs to close your account if you’re on a paid plan. This could include:
- early cancellation fees for paid plans
- a manufacturing fee for a Metal card received in the last 3 months
Can I re-open my account?
In most cases, it isn't possible to re-open a closed Revolut account. If you’d like to use Revolut again, you’ll need to open a new account with us. This means we'll carry out the verification process again and being approved for an account is subject to our internal checks at that time.
If you only want to take a short break from Revolut, we recommend downgrading to a Standard account if you’re on a paid plan, then keeping your Standard account open, since we don’t charge maintenance fees.
Revolut account closure and your personal data
Revolut is a regulated financial institution. When you close your account, we’re required by UK law to securely keep certain personal data, including your transaction records, for a minimum of 6 years after closure. This is a regulatory retention requirement for all financial institutions that supersedes the GDPR right to erasure for regulated data.
Troubleshooting: account blocks and restrictions
If you’re looking to close your account because you’re experiencing a temporary restriction or block, you’ll need to resolve this issue before the account can be closed.
How to lift a restriction
If your account is currently restricted, we’ll let you know in-app. To proceed with closure, follow the instructions to provide the documents or information we need from you. Once our team has finished our security checks, and lifted any restrictions, you can proceed with the in-app closure.
Revolut-initiated closure
If Revolut informs you that we’re closing your account, we’ll typically provide you with at least 60 days' notice via email, in line with regulatory requirements. During this time, you’ll be required to withdraw or transfer all funds. You should immediately open a chat with our support team if you wish to challenge this decision.
Making your final decision
We hope this article has provided you with enough information to decide if closing your Revolut account is the right choice for you. You can always explore our Help Centre or chat with support in-app if you have any questions or concerns.
Remember it’s free to keep a Standard account open. But if you’re sure that Revolut isn’t right for you, follow the steps to close your Revolut account quickly and efficiently.
