A Revolut account helps you manage all your money in one place. You can keep as many as 38 currencies in-app, send and receive transfers to multiple countries and currencies, and easily spend around the world with your Revolut debit card.

But when it comes down to it, you may want to know the key differences between Revolut and a traditional bank account.

If you’re wondering if you can use Revolut as your main bank account, this one’s for you. Read on to learn all you need to know about our features, authorisations, and security measures.

At a glance:

  • Revolut Bank UK Ltd received its UK banking licence in March 2026
  • Regulated by the PRA and FCA
  • Eligible deposits protected by FSCS up to £120,000
  • We offer sort code, account number, Direct Debits, and savings accounts

Does Revolut have a banking licence?

Yes, Revolut Bank UK Ltd was authorised as a fully licensed UK bank in March 2026, and is regulated by both the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

How does Revolut protect my money?

As a fully licensed UK bank, eligible deposits with us are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £120,000 per person per bank. This is the same protection offered by any other UK bank.

What does Revolut do with my money?

Right now, we're still working on moving all customers over to bank accounts. We're doing this as quickly as we can, but some customers may still have e-money accounts rather than bank accounts for now.

E-money accounts are protected through safeguarding — a set of laws that define how an e-money institution must secure your money. These laws are designed to ensure that if the provider fails, your money is kept in a safe place and can be paid back to you.

For safeguarded accounts, here's how it works: once we receive your money, it's held in a safeguarded account with a regulated bank or as high-quality liquid assets. Your savings are deposited with partner banks and eligible deposits are protected up to £120k per bank.

For bank accounts, we deposit your money at central banks, financial institutions, and in high-quality liquid assets such as government bonds and investment-grade bonds issued by reputable institutions. But you can still access your Revolut balance any time you need to.

What if Revolut fails?

In the unlikely event that Revolut Bank UK Ltd fails, eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000 per person per bank by the FSCS — an independent statutory organisation legally obliged to repay eligible customers. This payout would normally happen within 7 working days.

As we mentioned above, at the time of publication, some existing customers may still be in the process of being moved over to bank accounts, so banking protections may not yet apply to all customers‌.

Safeguarded money will also still be returned, but the time taken can be longer.

Can you use Revolut as your business account?

You can’t use a personal Revolut account as a business account, but we do offer a few options for managing your business finances.

You can set up a separate Revolut Business account to manage all your company finances — that way you can enjoy the look and feel of Revolut in a designated Business account. We offer Revolut Pay and Revolut Reader for customers to make online and in-person payments. Businesses can accept payments using just an iPhone and their Revolut Business app through Tap to Pay on iPhone.

If you’re a freelancer or sole trader, Revolut Pro might be a great fit for you. It’s an account that sits within your personal Revolut app, which you can use to manage your freelance finances.
