Online banking FAQs
- Online banking is a system that allows you to access your account and make transactions through a website or mobile app. It's also known as internet banking, virtual banking, web banking, or home banking. In recent years, it's become the most common way for customers to manage their bank accounts. With online banking, you get access to services traditionally offered at a local branch. You can make deposits, transfers, and bill payments, and more — entirely online. Online banking offers many benefits, including:
- Convenience: it allows you to make transactions anytime, anywhere. That means you can travel freely knowing you'll always have access to your account, even outside of business hours.
- Speed: you can quickly check your balances, pay bills, transfer money, download your statements, and more — without the queuing.
- Security: it gives you secure access to your account with password protection and encryption technology.
- Lower costs: you sometimes get more competitive rates and lower fees with online banks than with high-street banks that have physical branches.
- Control: it gives you real-time access to your money and online budgeting tools to help you manage your account more easily in one place.
- Internet banking is another term for online banking. It's a system that gives you access to your bank account through a website or mobile app. It allows you to make transactions like transfers, deposits, and bill payments online without having to go to a local branch. - It all depends on what you're looking for in a bank. Something that's an advantage for you may be a disadvantage for someone else, but here are some of the points that people often highlight.
Pros of online banking
- Higher interest rates: online banks often offer significantly better interest rates for savings accounts compared to traditional banks.
- Lower fees: many online banks have lower fees and fewer of them, which can be helpful for budgeting and managing expenses.
- No minimum deposits: most online banks require low or no minimum deposits to open accounts, making it easier for people with small amounts of money to start banking.
- Convenience: online banking provides the convenience of managing your finances anywhere, anytime — without queueing at your local branch.
- Access to personalised support: some online banks offer solid customer support that you can contact even outside of business hours, providing a blend of online convenience and in-person assistance.
Cons of online banking
- Lack of physical branches: online-only banks don't have local branches, which can be a disadvantage for those who prefer in-person banking.
- Limited services: online banks may offer more limited services compared to traditional banks, such as fewer ATMs.
- Security concerns: while most online banks provide encryption and site security, it's still important to protect your login details and passwords to avoid cyber threats.
- Customer service: access to face-to-face customer service may be limited or non-existent, although some banks (like Revolut!) offer 24-hour support.
- Online banking is generally considered safe, but the level of safety a bank offers depends on their technology and security measures. At Revolut, our top priority is keeping your account secure. Here are some of the ways we do that:
- We use two-factor authentication to make sure you're the only one who can log in to your account. We'll always ask you to log in to the app with your PIN, an SMS code, or biometrics to keep hackers out.
- We'll send you anti-fraud warnings in-app if we suspect that you may be the victim of a scam. Our 2,500-strong fraud prevention team is on the lookout.
- We protect your personal data with our full-stack security systems. We also make sure your data is processed responsibly, following the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and all global data protection legislation.
- Our 24/7 chat support is always encrypted, so you can be sure that the information you share with us is confidential.
- The best online bank for you depends on your needs and preferences. There are tonnes of options out there, so do your research and compare different providers to make an informed choice. Here are some points to consider when choosing an online bank:
- Fees: avoid surprises by researching the various types of fees that each bank charges, including monthly fees, overdraft fees, and ATM fees.
- Minimum balance requirements: some banks require you to keep a minimum amount of money in your account, so keep an eye out.
- Account features: decide what you want from your bank account and determine which banks can meet those needs.
- Customer support: since online banks don't have physical branches, make sure they provide a way for you to get help if you need to, either via chat or phone.
- User interface: make sure the bank's website or mobile app is intuitive and easy to navigate because you'll be using it often.
- Security: choose a bank that's insured and that has strong security measures in place to protect your money.
- Reviews: check the bank's ratings online and see what their customers are saying.
