Stack the cards in your favour

Virtual card

Virtual is your new reality. Go fully digital and manage your spending with debit cards that live exclusively in your Revolut app.

Virtual, digital, physical — let’s break it down

What is a virtual card?

A virtual card is a payment card that exists only in digital form. This means there’s no physical card associated with it and no cash withdrawals to keep track of.

Just like a traditional bank card, it contains a 16-digit card number, a 3-digit CVV code, and an expiry date that you can enter for online purchases. It’s stored right in your Revolut app, so just pull out your phone, tap, and pay.

Your secret weapon against fraud

The disposable virtual card

Disposable cards are designed to add an extra layer of security when you shop online. You get a new card number every time you pay, so your main account details are kept secret. After you make a purchase, vendors can’t use the same details to charge you again.

Making a one-off purchase from a new online store? Whip out your disposable card and prevent unauthorised charges. This is a fraudster’s worst nightmare.

Virtual debit card FAQs

  • Revolut offers 2 types of virtual debit cards. Which one is right for you? That depends on what you plan to use it for.
    • Disposable cards (also called single-use cards) are virtual debit cards that generate new details every time you make a payment. This means that vendors can’t trace them back to your account or charge you more than once without your authorisation. They’re specially made for one-off online purchases where you want extra privacy and security. Since their details change every time you pay, they’re not designed for contactless or recurring payments.
    • Multi-use cards have permanent card details, so you can use them to set up recurring payments, subscriptions, and deposits. You can also link them to Apple or Google Pay and make contactless payments in stores.

The good news is that you don't have to choose. You can hold both at a time. Still want a physical card that you can use at ATMs for cash withdrawals? Get one in addition to your virtual cards so that you’re prepared for every occasion. Fees may apply, so check your plan for more details.

  • You can create as many as 4 multi-use cards every 30 days until you reach a maximum of 20. You can also have 1 disposable card linked to your account. Since its details refresh after every purchase, one is all you need. You can make as many as 5 payments every 24 hours.
    • Virtual cards are stored safely in your Revolut app, which is protected by two-factor authentication. This security measure ensures that only you can log on to your account, view your card details, and complete payments.
    • If you suspect any fraud, you can freeze your card right in-app to block payments. Then unfreeze it just as easily when you’re ready to use it again. All it takes is a couple of taps.
    • When you use Apple Pay or Google Pay to make a purchase with your virtual cards, your real card number is kept secret. A unique encrypted code known as a token is used to complete your payment. This ensures that your details are safe.
    • Since there is no physical version of your virtual cards, you don’t have to worry about your card details being stolen if you lose your wallet.
  • The virtual debit card brand available to you depends on several factors, such as your location. You can see whether your card will be Visa or Mastercard right in-app before you create it. Both are accepted widely in many locations around the world.
