A credit card is a type of loan. As with any credit facility, you should consider the full financial commitment involved, including interest and fees.
Warning: if you don't make the repayments on your credit card, your account will go into arrears. This may affect your credit rating, which may limit your ability to access credit, a hire-purchase agreement, a consumer-hire agreement, or a Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) agreement in the future.

How to use a credit card: what you need to remember

Follow these steps to keep your finances healthy:

  • Pay in full: clear your statement balance every month to avoid paying interest on your purchases
  • Set up a Direct Debit: automate your payments in-app to ensure you never miss a deadline or get hit by late fees
  • Track your credit limit: keep your spending below 30% of your total limit to maintain a positive rating
  • Prioritise your needs: use your card for planned expenses or emergencies rather than impulsive buys
  • Stay secure: use a virtual credit card for extra protection when shopping online

What is a credit card?

A credit card is a payment tool that allows you to borrow money up to a certain limit to pay for goods and services. Unlike a debit card, which pulls money directly from your account, a credit card provides a line of credit that you can use and pay back over time. Each time you tap your card or enter your details online, you're essentially borrowing money.

You'll need to pay this back, usually with interest and fees unless you clear the balance in full.

Government stamp duty on credit cards in Ireland

In Ireland, there's a specific tax called government stamp duty (GSD) that applies to all credit card accounts. Let's break it down:

  • What it is: an annual government tax for having a credit card account
  • How much it is: for credit cards, the stamp duty's currently €30 per year
  • How it's collected: we collect this on behalf of the Irish Revenue Commissioners
  • When it's charged: it's charged once a year, usually in January, for the previous tax year
Remember: we don't offer tax advice, so you should always seek independent professional advice regarding your specific tax situation.

How credit cards work in Ireland

Understanding how credit cards work can help you stay in control. Here's a quick look at the journey from your first buy to your final payment:

  • The check: when you apply, we'll look at your account and your history to set a limit that works for you.
  • Spending: use your card in shops or online. We pay the shop and add it to your balance. With us, you can even create a virtual version of your credit card to add an extra layer of protection to your purchases.
  • The statement: every month, we'll send you a list of what you've spent and how much you owe.
  • Paying back: clear your balance in full by the due date to avoid paying interest. If you don't, interest will be added to the balance you owe. With us, you can spread costs with instalments on eligible transactions over €50, and pay flexibly over 3, 6, 9, or 12 months. For even more flexibility, you can choose your credit payment method — either a full payment or fixed, rolling monthly instalments. Interest charges apply.

Ways to use your credit card smartly with Revolut

Using a credit card responsibly is a powerful way to manage your money. Here are some ways to make sure your card works for you.

Pay your balance in full every month

Clearing your balance in full might be the smartest way to use credit. We recommend setting your repayments to Full statement balance in our app. This ensures you'll enjoy the freedom of borrowing without having to pay interest.

Use the card for what you need

A credit card works when you use it for necessary, planned costs. Buying things on a whim can lead to a balance that grows faster than you'll be able to pay it back. Think of your card as a temporary loan to yourself for things like car repairs or essential bills.

Never skip a payment

Paying at least the minimum amount by the deadline is essential to avoid late fees. Missing a payment creates a bad mark on your record that can stay for 5 years. This can make it much harder for you to get credit, like a mortgage, in the future.

Track your budget

You can track every cent in real-time by using a Revolut card for regular monthly shopping, as we provide advanced budgeting and analytics tools in-app. This gives you a clear overview of your habits.

Get more with credit card rewards

Choose a card that gives you something back for your spending.

If you turn on RevPoints in our app, your daily morning coffee or grocery shop could count towards your next adventure. You'll be able to swap points for flights with partner airlines, hotel stays, or unique experiences. Depending on your plan, you could earn up to 1 point / €1 spent on eligible spending. RevPoints T&Cs apply.

If you’re using one of our Paid plans, your Revolut account and Credit Card may also come with additional features like travel insurance or brand subscriptions worth several thousands of euros per year. Paid Plan Terms apply.

Don't use too much of your limit

Your credit score stays healthy when you don't use your entire borrowing pool. Try to keep your balance below 30% of your total limit. If your limit's €3,000, aim to keep your balance under €900 to show lenders you're not relying too much on credit.

Protect your spending

Protecting your card details, especially when you're shopping online, is crucial. With us, you can enhance your security by creating and using a virtual credit card for spending, which keeps your physical card details private.

Furthermore, adding your credit cards to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet provides an extra layer of protection. Instead of sharing your actual card details, these wallets use a unique token to secure your account information.

How to use a credit card to build credit history

Building a good credit history is all about showing you're a reliable borrower. In Ireland, information on how you use a credit card is shared with the Central Credit Register. Here's how you'll be able to build your profile:

  • Use your card for small, regular payments
  • Pay your bill in full every month
  • Avoid building up a high balance or only paying back the minimum amount
