What's the currency in Japan?
Japan has been using the Japanese Yen as its official currency since 1871.

Want to pay in cash like a local? You'll find Japanese Yen banknotes in ¥ 1,000, ¥ 2,000, ¥ 5,000, ¥ 10,000. Each Japanese Yen is divided into 100 subunits, called sen, with coins in ¥ 1, ¥ 5, ¥ 10, ¥ 50, ¥ 100, ¥ 500, ¥ 1,000.

Like all cities in Japan, Tokyo uses the Japanese Yen as its official currency. Each Japanese Yen is divided into 100 subunits, called sen.
While you're in Japan, you’ll see the symbol ¥ in shops and restaurants. If you're exchanging currencies, keep an eye out for the currency code JPY.Yes, you can use your Revolut card at shops, restaurants, and hotels in Japan that accept Visa and Mastercard.
All you have to do is add money to your account in any of our 25+ supported currencies and pay with your card as usual. We'll automatically exchange to JPY at the Revolut exchange rate. You can also make ATM cash withdrawals in Japanese Yen with your multi-currency card. You won't pay any Revolut ATM fees if you're within your plan's monthly fair usage limits:- Standard: no-fee in-network ATM withdrawals. At out-of-network ATMs, Standard customers pay a 2% fee.
- Premium: up to $800
- Metal: up to $1,200
These limits are set on a rolling monthly basis. This means they'll reset every month from the date you opened your account or the date you changed your plan. You can check your remaining monthly allowance in-app.

While it may make it easier to understand exactly how much you're paying in your home currency, you'll often get a poor exchange rate and pay additional fees.
