Physical vs virtual cards — what's the difference?

When you complete your ID verification in-app, you'll be able to order your first Revolut card. You can choose a physical or virtual card, depending on your needs.

Or, choose both. For example, you can use your virtual card to shop online, and your physical card to pay in stores. Customers on any Revolut plan can order up to 6 physical cards per person, and 4 virtual cards within a rolling 30-day period, per person.

Physical cards

When ordering a physical card, simply confirm your delivery address in the app and select your shipping method to complete the request.

It usually takes several days for your physical card to arrive. While you wait, you can start using virtual cards for online and contactless payments, from day one. If you choose a physical card, first confirm your delivery address is correct, then select the delivery method — easy as that.

If you’re a Standard plan customer, you'll pay a JPY500 delivery fee for your first physical card order. This covers the cost of shipping, there’s no fee for the card itself.

Virtual cards

If you'd like to choose a virtual card, go to the cards tab in-app → Add new → Virtual debit card. You'll see your virtual card appear in-app, which means it's ready to use.

Please note that physical cards never share the same card numbers as virtual cards. If you're using an Android device, you can add your virtual card to your Google Wallet, and if you're using an iOS device, you can add it to your Apple Wallet, and can use it in store, even before your physical card arrives (in shops that accept Google Pay or Apple Pay as a payment method).

Physical card delivery fees

The first physical card to be issued to a Standard plan customer will be subject to a delivery fee of JPY500.

Your card can be used until 11:59pm on the last day of the expiry month stated on the card. We'll inform you 28 days before its expiry date, and send you a new card.

Customised cards

Our customised cards feature is available from March 2024 for customers on a Standard plan, and ordering a customised card will cost JPY700.

The delivery fee for Standard plan customers is JPY500, or JPY2,000 for express delivery. For more information, please see our customised card T&Cs and Standard plan fees below.

Activating your physical card

When your physical card arrives, make sure to activate it in-app before using it for payments. To do this, you'll need to enter your 16-digit card number, which you can find in the cards section. For security reasons, physical cards can't be used for payments in stores or online until they're activated.

What's a virtual card for?

You can have up to 4 active virtual cards linked to your account, and use each card for specific spending needs, like bills or groceries. You can name each card to help you identify what they're for.

To make online payments with a virtual card, you’ll need your 16-digit card number, expiry date, and 3-digit security code (CVV). Unlike in-store payments, you won't need your 4-digit PIN.

To view your virtual card details (card number, expiry date, and security code), find your card in the cards section of the app, and tap the eye icon in the top-left corner. You’ll need to verify your identity through  your passcode or biometric authentication (this may be omitted after the first time) and, when authorised, the details will be displayed. Tap on the information to copy it to your clipboard.

Card issuance fees and card delivery fees (in JPY)

The fees below are the latest as of January 2026. All amounts stated include tax.

Premium plan fee details

• Your first and second Premium or Standard cards are free
• Your third and subsequent Premium or Standard cards will cost JPY2,000
• If you end your Premium subscription after your Premium or Standard card has been issued, and within 14 days of joining Premium, you'll be charged a fee by Revolut

Metal plan fee details

• The number of cards issued isn't counted for each type of physical card, but by the total number of physical cards issued, regardless of the type of card
• If you end your Metal subscription after your Metal, Premium, or Standard card has been issued, and within 14 days of joining Metal, you'll be charged a fee by Revolut
• In the above case, you can find the fee in-app when you end your subscription
