As of 27 August 2025, the 'Advisory on North Korean IT workers' was updated on Japanese government websites, including the Ministry of Finance.

'North Korean IT workers' are IT engineers from North Korea who conceal their nationality or identity to register on online platforms and other services. It's warned that these individuals may be using the money they earn from this work to fund nuclear and missile development, and that they may be involved in malicious cyber activities.

How do I stay protected?

When you use Revolut to carry out a transaction, carefully verify the legitimacy of the other party to ensure you're not transferring funds to a North Korean IT worker.

If our in-app security systems detect suspicious activity on your account, we may restrict your transactions and ask you to provide additional identity verification documents or information.

Signs to look out for:

  • Unnatural language or inconsistent identity
  • Refusal to engage in direct contact or video calls
  • Multiple operators involved
  • Insistence on payment in cryptocurrency or working off-platform
  • Pricing that's too good to be true

We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining Revolut as a trusted and secure platform for our customers in Japan.
