What's a wire transfer?

A wire transfer is a digital way of moving money directly between banks. It’s a bank-to-bank payment that doesn't use physical cash or paper checks, making it one of the most reliable ways to handle large or urgent payments.

In the US, domestic wires often move through the Fedwire system, which allows for fast settlement. International payments typically use the SWIFT network. This global system acts as a messaging service between banks to make sure your money reaches the right spot, no matter the distance.

How to do a wire transfer

You can start a wire transfer in a few ways, from visiting a bank in person to using modern mobile apps like ours. The right method for you will most likely depend on how urgent the payment is and how much you're willing to pay in fees.

Send a wire transfer online

We provide a simple alternative to old-school systems. Using an online platform like ours is convenient, as you don’t need to call your bank or visit a branch. Simply log in to your account, go to the Payments section, and enter your recipient's details. We'll show you exactly what it costs and when it'll arrive before you hit Send.

We believe that you shouldn’t compromise on security when you send money online, so we use advanced technology for fraud protection, as well as 2 factor authentication. Learn more about how we protect your money.

Visit your bank branch

If you prefer to talk to someone or need to send a lot of money that's more than your daily online limit, you can visit a local bank branch. You'll need to show a valid photo ID and fill out a form. A bank representative will then handle the transfer for you. Keep in mind that some banks may charge a higher fee for this than you'd pay if you did it yourself online.

With Revolut, you can send a wire transfer without going to a branch, and our in-app support is here to help 24/7 if you have any questions related to your transfer.

How to wire money internationally

Sending money abroad usually takes a few more steps than a domestic transfer because of currency exchange and the rules in other countries. To send a wire transfer to another country, you'll need your recipient’s International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and the bank’s SWIFT/BIC code.

When you send an international transfer, the money might pass through other financial institutions before it reaches its final stop. It's important to check the exchange rate your provider gives you. We offer competitive exchange rates and will display them in-app before you confirm the transfer.

How to wire money: the information needed for a wire transfer

Using the right details is the most important part of the process. Because wire transfers usually can't be undone once they're sent, a single wrong number can lead to long delays or your money being sent back to you.

For domestic wires within the US, make sure you have:

  • your recipient’s full legal name and address.
  • the name of the institution receiving the money.
  • your recipient’s account number.
  • the receiving institution's 9-digit ABA routing number.

For international wire transfers, you'll also need:

  • your recipient’s IBAN (common in Europe and the Middle East).
  • the SWIFT or BIC code of the receiving institution.
  • the country you're sending to and the type of currency they'll receive.

How long does a wire transfer take?

Domestic wire transfers are usually completed within 24 hours if you send the request before the bank's daily cut-off time. If you send a wire late in the afternoon or over a weekend, it'll typically be handled on the next business day.

International transfers take longer to arrive, often between 1–5 business days. The exact duration depends on the country, time zones, and how many intermediary institutions are needed to help move the money.

Wire transfers: Costs to consider

The price of a wire transfer depends on the provider and the type of transfer. Some US providers can typically charge between $25–35 for a domestic wire. International transfers are more expensive, often ranging between $45–50.

We believe that transfers should be accessible, and pricing should be upfront. Wire transfers to another US account cost $10 with Revolut. If your transfer isn’t urgent, our traditional transfers to US bank accounts in USD using ACH payment network come at no cost, but can take up to 5 business days to complete.

For international transfers, we charge a small fee, which varies based on the transfer details such as the destination country. We’ll show you applicable costs and exchange rates in-app before you hit Send.

On top of your fee, the receiving bank might also charge the recipient a fee to accept the money.

If your budget is lower, you might want to try a Revolut-to-Revolut transfer, which doesn't carry transfer fees and can arrive within seconds.

How to protect your wire transfer

Security's important because wire transfers are fast and difficult to reverse. Scammers often target people by lying to them to get a wire transfer, as the money's difficult to recover once it's been paid out.

To protect yourself, never wire money to someone you haven't met or a business you don't know much about. If you get an email or phone call asking for an urgent wire transfer, always contact the person via a different method to check it was them. Always double-check every number for the account and routing details before you confirm the transfer, whether you're doing it in-app or at the bank.
