What information do you need to send money to a bank account?

You'll need specific info to make sure your money gets to the right place. To send money to a bank account in the US, here's what you'll usually need:

  • Their full name: The real name on the account you're sending to.
  • Routing number: A 9-digit code that identifies the financial institution where the account is held.
  • Account number: The unique number for that specific checking or savings account.
  • Account type: Tell us if you're sending to a checking or savings account.

Getting this info right is important because once a transfer's started, it can be hard to reverse. Always check these one last time before you confirm the transfer.

Bank transfer networks in the US

You can move money to a bank account via 2 main methods: classic bank transfers that ‌go through the ACH network, and wire transfers. The right choice depends on how quickly you need the money to arrive and how much you're willing to pay in fees.

Domestic ACH transfers

Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfers are the most commonly used method for moving money between US accounts.

  • Speed: These usually take 1–3 business days to go through, but can take up to 5 days in certain circumstances.
  • Cost: With Revolut, transfers using ACH in USD don't cost anything.
  • Usually used for: Normal bills, getting your pay, and transfers that aren't urgent.

Domestic wire transfers

Wire transfers are built for speed and are often used for sending large amounts.

  • Speed: These are usually done on the same day if you send them before the provider’s daily cutoff time.
  • Cost: They may involve higher fees, with some providers charging up to $35. At Revolut, wire transfers only cost $10.
  • Usually used for: Urgent and large payments, like a deposit for a new house.

Can I send money from a card to a bank account?

Yes, you can send money from a card to a bank account by using an app like ours to bridge the gap.

By linking your debit card to our app, you'll be able to take money from that card and send it to a recipient’s bank account. If you use a credit card, keep in mind that your card provider may treat it like taking cash out of an ATM. This usually means they'll charge you extra fees.

How to transfer cash to a bank account

If you've got physical cash that you want to put into a bank account that isn't yours, it's a little more complex because of safety and security rules. These are your options:

  • Pay in at a branch: You can go to a branch of the bank you're sending to and fill out a slip. But many US banks will no longer let you put cash into an account if your name isn't on it.
  • Money orders: You can buy a money order at a post office or shop using cash, then post it to the recipient so they can pay it in.
  • Shop transfer services: Some places let you pay cash at a counter to send it to a bank account, but this carries fees.
  • Use Revolut: You can add cash easily to your Revolut account at select retailers (known as Participating Retailers) via the Add Cash feature for a retail service fee of up to $4.95, which will be collected by the Participating Retailer. Participating Retailers are displayed in our app. Once the cash is added to your account, you can transfer it to a bank account. Add Cash Terms and Conditions, fees, and limits apply.
