How long does an ACH transfer take?
Product · December 4, 2025Clément Bolmont
You've initiated a payment to or from a US bank account, and now you're left waiting and wondering: how long does an ACH transfer take?
For customers dealing with US domestic payments, the process can feel confusing and slow because, unlike the UK's Faster Payments system, the US operates via the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. This batch-processing system can mean money takes longer to arrive than you might expect.
At Revolut, we aim to remove these traditional obstacles. Sending money within the US should be just as fast and simple as paying for a coffee.
Read on to learn about ACH money transfers and how we use modern technology to speed up these domestic US payments.
The information provided is accurate as of November 27 2025.
Exchange and transfer fees, fair usage limits, and T&Cs apply.
What's an ACH transfer and how does it work?
The ACH network is a domestic US payment system that moves money between US accounts. It's the system used for almost all electronic, non-card transactions within the United States. It handles direct deposits (like salaries) and direct payments (like utility bills).
If you're making a payment in the US, the transaction normally goes through the ACH network. It's important to know that this system doesn't move money immediately.
The ACH network explained
The Automated Clearing House network is managed by Nacha (National Automated Clearing House Association) and processes billions of payments annually.
Unlike the UK's Faster Payments, which settles transactions individually and quickly, the ACH network operates on a batch processing system. Here's how it works:
- Batching: Banks and institutions collect payment requests throughout the day and submit them to the ACH network in large batches, not one by one
- Processing: The network processes these batches several times per day
- Settlement: The money is formally settled and delivered to the recipient’s account (or returned to the sender) after processing
This batched system is reliable and inexpensive but is the main reason why an ACH transfer time is often measured in days, not minutes.
A note on wires, SWIFT, and SEPA
While ACH is the domestic system, you might hear other terms:
- Wire transfer: This is a separate system, often used for large or urgent payments. Wire transfers are settled individually and in real-time, making them faster but more expensive than ACH.
- Society for Worldwide Interbank Telecommunication (SWIFT): This is the global system used for messaging between banks and financial institutions for most cross-border international transfers.
- Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA): This is the network that handles euro payments across Europe, often immediately if SEPA Instant is supported.
If you're sending money to a US account, we use local payment systems whenever available. These connect directly to the ACH network or other systems to make sure your money moves efficiently without getting caught up in the slow global SWIFT chain.

What's the typical ACH transfer time?
Generally, a standard ACH transfer can take up to 3 business days to arrive in the recipient’s account. But it can be faster if your payment was initiated relative to the ACH processing schedule and if the banks and institutions involved support same-day processing.
The batch processing cycle
ACH isn't a quick system. Banks submit payment files to the network, and the network then processes those files and sends them to the receiving account. This involves multiple settlement windows throughout the day. This is how the process is split:
- Day 1 (initiation): You authorize the payment with your bank or financial institution. It’s batched and sent to the ACH network.
- Day 2 (processing): The ACH network processes the batch and sends the instruction to the recipient’s bank or institution.
- Day 3 (settlement): The money is settled and made available in the recipient’s account.
The 1–3 day timeline is the common estimate used by financial institutions across the US.
The difference between standard ACH and same-day ACH
In an effort to modernize, the ACH network has introduced Same Day ACH.
- Standard ACH: Takes 1–3 business days. Most high-volume payments (like salary payroll) use this.
- Same Day ACH: This is an optional service offered by some banks for faster, non-urgent payments. Payments can arrive on the same business day, but they must be initiated before an early cut-off time (often around noon in the US). Banks might charge extra for this speed.
We don’t support Same Day ACH yet, but you can use Revolut-to-Revolut transfers to send money to other customers with Revolut in seconds, not days.
What factors can cause an ACH transfer delay?
While modern providers like us use faster mechanisms, several external factors can still affect your overall ACH transfer time, including:
Weekends and public holidays
The ACH network operates only on US business days (Monday–Friday, excluding federal holidays).
- Holidays: If you initiate a payment the day before a US public holiday, the transfer won't begin processing until the next business day.
- Weekends: A payment initiated late on a Friday afternoon won't be picked up by the network until Monday morning, effectively adding 2 days to the transfer time. To prevent this stall, try to send your payment earlier in the week.
Transaction cut-off times
Financial institutions follow strict daily cut-off times for processing. If you authorize a payment after your bank's cut-off time, the bank will treat it as if it were initiated on the next business day. This can be critical for Same Day ACH, where the cut-off is often very early.
Anti-fraud and compliance checks
All large or unusual payments are subject to mandatory security checks designed to prevent fraud and money laundering. These include:
- Automated flagging: Transactions that are irregular, large, or sent to a new recipient might be flagged by automated systems for manual review. This means a compliance officer must step in to verify the source and destination of the money. While necessary, this can introduce a delay of up to one full business day.
- Mistakes in details: The most common cause of significant delays is an error in the recipient's details. A typo in the name, account number, or the essential routing code will cause the transfer to be held, rejected, or sent back. This correction and bouncing process can add anywhere from 5–15 business days to the transfer. Always double-check the recipient's information before you confirm the transfer.

Revolut vs traditional systems: speeding up ACH transfers
Modern money transfers rely on the most efficient network available. While traditional banking often depends on older, slower processes, we use a combination of local payment mechanisms and modern systems to move your money faster and with greater clarity.
Here's a general comparison of typical transfer speeds:
Scenario | Traditional banking | Revolut |
US domestic (account to account) | 1–3 business days | Minutes or hours (using local systems, where supported) |
Transfer to another customer | Varies (might be seconds within the same traditional bank, usually slower across different banks) | Seconds (Revolut-to-Revolut transfer) |
Fast and clear transfers using local payment systems
We bypass the lengthy international ACH transfer process to offer speed across every channel:
- Revolut-to-Revolut transfers: All payments between Revolut customers take seconds and are available 24/7, regardless of geographical distance or time zone.
- Local speed: For domestic US transfers, we often use the ACH network, but by connecting to local payment systems, we cut out the typical 1–3 day waiting time where possible. This ensures that the time frame for your payment is measured in minutes or hours for most transactions, whether domestic or global.
- Faster international transfers with us: We ensure the payment clears at domestic speed — international transfers may arrive in minutes or hours for most global destinations.
- Clear fees upfront: We always show applicable fees and currency exchange rates before you hit Send, providing you with clarity and predictability on transfer costs.
