The Imposto sobre Operações Financeiras (IOF) is a Brazilian federal tax applied to various financial transactions, including foreign exchange.
When you send money from your Revolut BRL account to an international account in a different currency, the IOF tax will be applied to the currency exchange portion of your transfer.
This is a mandatory tax set by the Brazilian government, and the rate can vary depending on the transaction type and current regulations.
For example, receiving money into Brazil typically incurs a 0.38% IOF, while sending money abroad from Brazil (outbound transfers) generally has a higher rate, such as 3.5% for many types of transfers (as per recent changes).
Revolut will always show you the full cost, including any applicable IOF, before you confirm your transfer in the app, ensuring full transparency.
How much can I transfer abroad without paying IOF tax?
Unfortunately, there are no thresholds or limits to avoid the IOF tax when sending money from Brazil internationally where a currency exchange is involved.
IOF is a mandatory tax applied to the foreign exchange operation itself, regardless of the amount transferred.
