What to do next

You should be extra careful after losing a device. Follow these steps to help you stay safe, and get back to normal as quickly as possible.

  1. Report the incident

If your phone was stolen, let the police know as soon as you can. It may lead to the phone being recovered, and will provide you with an incident report as a record of what’s happened.

  2. Lock the device

Android users can either use the Remote Lock feature, or use Google’s Find My Device.

iPhone users can visit iCloud and put their device in Lost Mode.

  3. Be wary of fraudsters

If you get an unexpected call or a text asking you to unlock the device, ignore and report it. Until the device is back in your hands, it should stay logged out, and marked as ‘lost’.

  4. Contact your provider

Inform your mobile network provider — so they can block both your SIM number and your phone’s unique identity number, or IMEI.

  5. Change your passwords

If your device was logged into any email accounts, change them immediately — and check no auto-forwarding has been set up. Your email provider should have guidelines on checking this.

  6. Check your 2FA settings

Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, is an extra line of security that often uses mobile numbers as additional verification. If you have this set up anywhere, change your settings immediately.

  7. Log into your socials

If you were logged into any social media platforms, log into them via a new device and remove your lost one from the account.

  8. Share with your circle

Let your family and friends know at the earliest opportunity. Fraudsters may contact them pretending to be you, asking for money or ways to gain access to your device.

  9. Inform your insurance

If you have insurance, let them know — and share the police report, alongside any other relevant documents.
