14 June 2021

Revolut, the financial superapp with 15 million customers worldwide, celebrates Pride month in June, with the relaunch of its iconic rainbow card, first created in 2019, in support of an international fundraising campaign.

All funds raised in the UK and Europe will go to ILGA-Europe, one of Revolut’s European Donations partners, to support its journey towards a world where no one will be persecuted, oppressed or discriminated against for their sexual orientation or gender identity. ILGA-Europe is one of many charities that Revolut customers can support by donating in the Donations section of the Revolut app. US customers can donate to Revolut’s US Donations partner, OutRight Action International. Charitable organisations receive 100% of all Revolut customers' donations made in the Revolut app.

To generate awareness of this cause among its community and allies, and raise support for ILGA-Europe and its programmes, Revolut also launched a social media contest. This will run from 11 June until 15 July. Revolut customers are invited to post a creative photograph of their Revolut rainbow card (perhaps with an iconic or picturesque background, or pictured in an iconic LGTBQ+ location) on their social media account on Twitter or Instagram, and tag @revolutapp.

Customers can also share a message about why it’s important for them to support the LGBTQ+ community or why they feel proud showing Pride colours if they wish but this isn’t a requirement for the social media contest Revolut will reward the creator of the most creative photograph with a prize of £5,000, and match the prize with a £5,000 donation to ILGA-Europe*. The winner will be announced on Revolut’s social media channels on Twitter and Instagram on 12 August, coinciding with this year’s World Pride Day celebration in Copenhagen**.

UK and European customers can order Revolut’s rainbow card in the Revolut app after their first donation to ILGA-Europe of £1 or more and those in the US can donate $5 to OutRight Action International (100% of the donation goes to the charity) to unlock this card for customers who have not already ordered a Revolut rainbow card before.

After donating, customers can either tap the “order charity card” button that will appear in their app or they can go to the Cards section to find the rainbow card (card delivery fees apply - these will be shown to customers in the app before they order their rainbow card).

In addition to customers’ donations and card orders, from today until 15 July, for each new card ordered in by UK and European customers, Revolut will donate a further £1 to ILGA-Europe up to a maximum of £5,000.

The rainbow card is one of Revolut’s efforts to make sure everyone has the right to love who they want to love, and be who they want to be, expressing their own identity. Revolut’s European Donations partner is ILGA-Europe, a charity working with and supporting 600+ member organisations across 54 countries across Europe and Central Asia. It advocates for and monitors LGBTQ+ inclusive law and policy at European level, and donations go towards the two main pillars: advocating for human rights and equal treatment of LGBTQ+ people at European level; and strengthening the LGBTQ+ movement in Europe and Central Asia by providing support to frontline LGBTQ+ activists.

Each year ILGA-Europe publishes its annual Rainbow Europe Map and Index, ranking the legal and policy situation of LGBTQ+ people in 54 European and central Asian countries. This year’s report, made public on 17 May, finds that during 2020, advances in LGBTQ+ rights came to almost a complete standstill, an unprecedented situation, with almost no positive legislative change for LGBTQ+ people in Europe, which demonstrates that there is still much to be done.

Inga Askamit, Culture & Engagement Manager at Revolut said: “Pride is not just about celebrating freedom, love and equality. It’s also a time to recognise that there is still a long way to go until everyone has the right to love who they want to love, and be who they want to be. That’s why we launched our rainbow card in 2019 and that’s why we are promoting it for the third year with this donation campaign for ILGA-Europe. We hope that our customers will join us in taking another step towards a more inclusive world.”

Evelyne Paradis, Executive Director at ILGA-Europe, said: “I’m delighted that Revolut is partnering with ILGA-Europe for a third year running, to raise funds for the LGBTQ+ movement, which we advocate for and support through our vital work. At a time when LGBTQ+ rights are at a disturbing standstill across Europe and Central Asia, our message is that the work for equality for all must continue, and especially so when circumstances are challenging.

“As we redouble our efforts and push for concrete action for LGBTQ+ rights, while at the same time working to strengthen and build the resilience of LGBTQ+ activists and organisations, having the continued support of allies like Revolut is incredibly important. Donations made by the community of Revolut users during Pride season and throughout the year have a real impact on our work towards a world where every LGBTQ+ person can live free to be who they are, love who they love, and express themselves wholly, without fear or restraint.”

Revolut is also celebrating Pride with its more than 2,200 employees across the world. Internal remote events include quizzes, weekly newsletters and Pride month resources. Revolut employees will be invited to take part in internal challenges and a competition and will have the chance to get involved in challenges and training to continue creating a more inclusive working environment.

For the first time, Revolut will add the Pride colours to some in-app animations as well as its official logo.
