Lost in transit: the rise of delivery scams

As e-commerce thrives, so does our reliance on delivery services. In our increasingly online world, it’s possible to order goods from all over the globe, and have them delivered straight to your door.

However, our dependency on delivery services has become a catalyst for fraudulent activity. Falling victim to a fraudster who fakes delivery services is called a delivery scam. In this post, we'll explain what they look like, as well as what you can do to avoid becoming a victim.

What are delivery scams?

Delivery scams often come in the form of fake notifications or fraudulent tracking links. These look genuine on the surface, mimicking real customer communications to trick unsuspecting customers. Scammers exploit our dependency on delivery services by posing as representatives of legitimate businesses, targeting both consumers and businesses.

How do they work?

  • Phishing texts and emails: scammers send messages claiming there’s an issue with your delivery. These messages contain links that redirect you to fake courier sites, prompting you to enter personal or payment details to resolve the "issue" and get your package delivered to you.
  • Fake delivery notices: fraudsters leave fake delivery notices at your door, or send them to your email inbox. These notices instruct you to call a number or visit a website, where you may be asked to pay additional fees for delivery or provide sensitive information.
  • Package theft (porch piracy): although not a digital scam, porch piracy is a growing issue as more people shop online. Thieves monitor delivery schedules and steal packages left unattended.

How do I protect myself?

  • Be sceptical of random links. Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited messages, and always navigate directly to the courier’s official website to track your package or resolve delivery issues. If in doubt, do not click on links — malicious sites can steal your information in seconds.
  • Don’t share sensitive information. Remember — never share your one-time password or security codes when signing up to websites or making purchases. This can enable fraudsters to perform unauthorised payments from your accounts.
  • Check your delivery preferences. Many courier services allow you to specify a safe drop-off location or require a signature upon delivery. Be wary of ‘sorry we missed you’ messages — especially if you weren’t expecting a package.
  • Monitor your deliveries. Use tracking tools from reputable carriers to stay updated on your package’s location and estimated arrival.
