Cascading goals
At Revolut, we design every goal using a top-down structure. First, we establish high-level goals for the entire company. Then, we work out what each department needs to do to achieve these larger company goals, and then how teams can help accomplish the departmental goals, and so on.
This way, goals cascade downwards — everyone from executives to individual employees are aligned on their part:
- Company goals — abstract targets, set annually by leadership, that focus on key growth areas
- Departmental goals — strategic objectives developed by breaking down company goals into different components
- Team goals — refined versions of the strategic objectives that explain how every team can contribute effectively
- Employee goals — day-to-day tasks that align with company priorities, helping individuals see their direct impact
Linking each individual’s tasks to the broader company vision helps improve engagement and encourage accountability.
Creating a single source of truth
Tracking goal progress is an essential part of goal management, from the individual level to entire departments. However, it can become time-consuming and complicated if everyone stores their relevant data in different places, using different tools (like spreadsheets, dashboards, or emails).
